Have a little read: ... Plan Aim: To estimate the concentration of the sucrose solution within potato cells. Plan: To place pieces of potato in different solutions of sucrose. They will be weighed before and after to see if water moves in and out. Background Information: Osmosis is a special kind of diffusion, it applies only to water. During osmosis, water moves form an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration. Or, from a dilute solution (lots of water, not much solute) to a strong solution (lots of solute, not much water). Osmosis occurs through a semi-permeable membrane. If a cell, with a high concentration of water, is placed in a solution with a low concentration of water; the water will move out of the cell into the solution. The water has moved from a weak solution to a strong solution of solute molecules. When water moves out of a cell, the vacuole shrinks and the cytoplasm is pulled away
