Stem Cell Research According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary (1), Stem cells are cells which do not have specific functions but they can develop into other cells that have specific roles in the body. They are characterized by the ability to renew themselves through cell division and differentiate into a range of specialized cell types. Some stem cells are totipotent, meaning they can develop into any type of cell. Other stem cells are multipotent and can develop into only one type of cell or a limited number of other types of cells. Stem cells can be classified into two groups; adult stem cells and embryonic stem cells, which are taken from an embryo.
