Osmosis investigation Planning Osmosis is the spontaneous passage or diffusion of water through a semi-permeable membrane (this means it will only let certain things through) until the to liquids involved are of equal concentration. An example of osmosis would be: if you soaked onionskin in strong sugar solution, the palisade cells would shrivel up, because water has moved from the cytoplasm of the cells, into the solution. For our preliminary experiment we tried soaking potato in water and in sugar solution. We found that if it was soaked in sugar solution it decreased in length and mass, and if we soaked it in water, it gained length and mass, we found that for the experiment to produce adequate results, it would have be soaked for about ten minutes.
