Osmosis investigation Aim: To study how potato chips change in different sugar solutions. Prediction: I predict that in a weak sugar solution, the potato chip will gain mass because the solution contains a higher concentration of water molecules than the potato chip, which contains a high concentration of other molecules, and so the water particles move through the partially permeable membrane into the chip. In this experiment, the potato will also increase in size, and the cells will become turgid, as the water goes through the partially permeable potato cells, and fills into the cell vacuole. In strong sugar solution, the potato chips will lose mass and become lighter, because the solution contains a lower concentration of water molecules than the potato chips, and more sugar molecules.
