Osmosis in Potato's GCSE Science Coursework Jenna Dawson Aim: To investigate the effect of varying concentration of a certain sugar solution on the amount of osmotic activity between the solution and a potato chip of a given size. Research: Osmosis is when the molecules move about a solvent, through a semi-permeable membrane, decreasing the concentration of a solute on the other side of the membrane. The principle of this is to match the two sides of the membrane, so they are balanced. This is caused by osmotic pressure, an irreversible type of diffusion. This is when molecules jump from one place with a high concentration to another with a low concentration. Plan: To find out the rate of osmosis in a potato chip, we can place the chips in five different solutions: i. Distilled water ii. 5% of sucrose solution iii. 10% of sucrose solution iv. 15% of sucrose solution v. 20% of sucrose solution We are going...
