Biology Coursework Osmosis Practical Aim To investigate how the concentration of sugar affects osmosis using potato cells. Diffusion is the movement of molecules from a high concentration to a low concentration. Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a partially permeable cell membrane from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution down a concentration gradient. The movement of water through a partially permeable membrane is increased if there is a large difference between the two concentrations eg. in the plant vacuole when there is water surrounding the plant cell. There is such a large concentration of sugar over water that the water surrounding the vacuole diffuses through the cell membrane to dilute the concentration of sugar to create equilibrium of water outside of and inside of the cell.
