Sean Sutton Osmosis Coursework Centre Number: 13440 Candidate Number: 0109 Osmosis Introduction: Over the past term we have been studying osmosis and diffusion. It is when you put a strong solution into a weaker solution such as sugar. Osmosis is described as the passage of water from a region of high water concentration through a semi-permeable membrane to a region of low water concentration. If the solutions on each side are equally concentrated then there will be no movement of water across the membrane. If the solution outside the cell has a low concentration, the cells become affected because water is flowing into them, if the solution outside the cell is of high concentration the water flows out. If two solutions of different concentration are separated by a semi-permeable membrane which is permeable to the smaller solvent molecules but not to the larger solute molecules, then the solvent will tend to diffuse across the membrane...
