Osmosis Name; Steven Brennan Class; 11E School; St. Patrick's Academy, Dungannon ( Boys ) Background Knowledge; We met osmosis when we were studying cells and the movement of substances through the cell membrane. Osmosis is the movement of water from a dilute solution, through a selectively or semi-permeable membrane, to a more concentrated solution. A selectively or semi-permeable membrane is a membrane of a cell which controls the flow of substances through it. The flow of water will stop when the concentrations are the same on both sides of the membrane. There are two factors that affect osmosis; * The concentration of the solution outside and inside of the cell and * The temperature of the solution. If the solution surrounding the plant cell is more dilute than the cell it takes in water until the cell becomes turgid. When the cell becomes turgid it is full of water and it can no longer take in anymore...
