Osmosis Investigation. Introduction Osmosis is the movement of water, from a higher concentration of water to a lower concentration of water through a semi-permeable membrane. Osmosis is a form of diffusion that takes place when two solutions or concentrations are separated by a semi permeable membrane. The membrane stops large dissolved molecules from passing through, but allows the passage of water molecules pass through the membrane until both of the solutions are the equal strengths. If water moves out of the cell faster than it enters it will become flaccid, if the water moves out of the cell slower than it enters it will become turgid. Applying external pressure to the solution on the more concentrated side arrests osmosis, and is a measure of the osmotic pressure of the solution. Fish have protective mechanisms to counteract osmosis, which would otherwise cause fluid transport between the body of the animal...
