Coursework 30th December 02 Osmosis Investigation Analysing Information Osmosis is the process taking place which causes the potato to lose mass as the concentration of the sucrose solution increases. Osmosis is the passage of water from a region of high water concentration (dilute solution) to a region of low water concentration (concentrated solution), through a selectively permeable membrane. A selectively permeable membrane is a membrane which allows some molecules to pass through it but stops others. The cell membrane acts as the selectively permeable membrane. In this case, the tiny holes in the membrane of the potato allowed the water molecules to pass through in and out of the sucrose solution and the potato, depending on the concentration gradient of the two substances. When the concentration of the sucrose solution is increased there is a bigger difference in concentration between two areas in the concentration gradient. The greater the difference in...
