Osmosis Investigation Aim The aim of the experiment is to investigate how osmosis in plant cells is affected by different concentrations of water and salt solution. Preliminary Work Osmosis is a special type of diffusion, where water molecules move from an area of high concentration to an area with a lower concentration, through a semi-permeable membrane. The semi-permeable membrane is a very thin layer that will allow water to pass through because the molecules are quite small, but not most other substances, such as starch or sucrose which have larger molecules. Osmosis can occur in animal or plant cells, and in this experiment it took place in potato cells. The water molecules move from both areas, although more will diffuse from the area with a high concentration as molecules will tend to move into all the available space until they are evenly spread out, and both areas contain the same amount of...
