Biology SC1. Osmosis. Aim. My main aim in this experiment is to find out if osmosis occurs in a potato, and how it affect the potato in different molar solutions of sucrose and water. Apparatus. Stop Watch 18 test tubes 3 test tube racks Potatoes Potato cutter Scalpel Scales Heatproof mat Ruler Tissue paper 50 ml Measuring cylinder Sucrose solutions Prediction. Osmosis is the passing of water molecules from a weaker solution to a stronger solution through a semi-permeable membrane. In the water, I believe that the water is more concentrated in the potato, and therefore the water will move from the water to the potato, making the potato bigger in size, and heavier in weight. The potato chip, being surrounded by a weaker solution, will be most likely to swell up, taking in all the water it can possibly take in.
