Biology Coursework Investigation on the affect of Osmosis in Potato Cells Aim Our aim is to see whether the New Potato and the normal King Edward grow differently in salty soils. This shall be determined by performing some experiments to show whether it's the osmosis effect that allows the potato to survive. Prediction / Hypothesis Osmosis is a special case of diffusion, where water diffuses through a membrane, which has different concentrations on either side. Membranes in cells allow small molecules to pass through, e.g. water, but prevent larger ones from passing. This is called "selectively permeable". Here is a simple diagram that shows what happens in Osmosis: If a selectively permeable solution separates the two solutions, water moves through it in both directions at the same time. However, more water leaves a dilute solution (high concentration) and passes into a more concentrated solution (low concentration of water) then enters it....
