Investigation into the percentage yield of Calamine Aim: I am trying to find out the percentage yield on calamine to zinc oxide. Method: First I set up the apparatus as shown below in the diagram. Weigh the tube when it is empty and record the results. Then weigh the boiling tube containing the calamine and mineral wool, again record the results. Then ignite the Bunsen burner and put it on a blue flame but not a roaring flame. If a roaring flame is introduced too early then the moisture in the boiling tube will evaporate and then condense which will add H²0 into my experiment, which would ruin it, because of the impurities. After 5 minutes, change and make the flame a roaring one. The calamine will change colour. When you are certain that all the calamine has changed colour then you can take the heat away.
