Jenny Smith 11C Investigation into the effects of the concentration of sucrose solution on potato cylinders. I am going to investigate the effect that different concentrations of sucrose solution has upon the mass and length of a potato cylinder. In order to investigate this, I will place potato cylinders into sucrose solutions of varying concentration, and record any changes to the cylinder. Method Using a cork borer cut 18 potato cylinders. If it is possible, use the same potato when taking these samples. Using a scalpel, remove the skin from each end of the cylinder; this is to ensure that each cylinder has an equal surface area of 'flesh' in contact with the sucrose solution. Using a ruler, measure the potato cores, and then cut them using a scalpel so that they are 30mm in length. Using a balance, find the mass of each potato cylinder, and record.
