INVESTIGATING OSMOSIS IN A POTATO TISSUE 1. AIM The aim of the experiment was to investigate the phenomenon of osmosis into and out of a potato and factors affecting the rate of osmosis. 2. THEORY AND BACKGROUND Osmosis is a special case of diffusion process. Cell membranes, which are semi-permeable, allow water to move into or out of cells. Diffusion is the movement of molecules from a region in which they are highly concentrated to a region in which they are less concentrated. It depends on the motion of the molecules and continues until the system in which the molecules are found reaches a state of equilibrium, which means that the molecules are randomly distributed throughout the system. Water will diffuse from a place where there is a high concentration of water molecules to where there is a low concentration of water molecules. Dilute sugar solution is an example of high concentration...
