Investigating factors which might affect the rate of osmosis I am going to investigate the effect of temperature on the rate of osmosis. Osmosis is a special type of diffusion where there is a net movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane from a relatively dilute solution to a relatively concentrated one. This membrane which has microscopic holes in it, acts like a biological sieve and allows small molecules like water to pass through it but also acts as a barrier to larger molecules such as starch, proteins and fats. The factors that effect the rate of osmosis are the concentration of the dilute, the temperature and the surface area. I will be investigating the changes in temperature. I will do this by placing potato cylinders of the same length into water baths set at 5 different temperatures (30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 degrees Celsius). I will then...
