Investigating Osmosis In Plant Cells Aim: I am going to investigate whether water moves into or out of cells by osmosis, depending on the concentration on the sugar solution that the cells are placed into. I will know if osmosis has occurred when we take the mass of the plant cell, if osmosis has occurred then the mass will have increased or decreased from the original mass. Background: Osmosis is the passage of water molecules from a weaker solution (a high concentration of water) to a stronger solution (a low concentration of water) through a partially permeable membrane. There are a few factors that can affect osmosis, one of them is temperature. Temperature affects osmosis because at higher temperatures, the water particles have more energy and therefore move around a lot more, this increases the rate of osmosis.
