Biology coursework Planning: - The enzyme catalase is found in many types of living tissue. Copper ions are known to affect many enzyme reactions. Investigate the effects of increasing copper ions concentration on the catalytic activity of catalase found in potato tissue. Copper sulphate solution can be used as a source of copper ions. Prediction- My hypothesis is that as the volume of copper ions in copper sulphate solution increases the rate of reaction will decrease. I believe the following background knowledge helps to support my theory. Scientific knowledge- "Copper behaves as a non-competitive irreversible inhibitor. Copper can combine permanently with sulphydryl (-SH) groups in proteins. These may be enzymes or carrier proteins in membranes. The change induced may cause the protein to precipitate and can certainly change the shape of the active site." (Source: 1) (Source: 2) From this I have found out that copper ions act as a non competitive inhibitors which are irreversible therefore will change the shape of...
