Biology coursework Aim We have been asked to investigate the effect of osmosis on potato chips. Osmosis From previous biology lessons I know that osmosis is the movement of water from a weaker solution into a stronger solution through a semi-permeable membrane while the other solutions are blocked and unable to pass through the membrane. Each cell is surrounded by a cell membrane, this separates the contents of the cell from the outside. The cell membrane has tiny holes in it. This allows small molecules to pass through but not large ones. So the cell membrane is partially permeable. Diffusion is the movement of molecules from a higher concentration to a lower concentration. When the barrier between two substances is removed (right), the molecules will diffuse throughout the entire container. While the number of molecules in the container is the same as it was before the barrier was removed, the substances are now at lower...
