The effect of osmosis on potato cells Planning: In this investigation, my aim is to find out if osmosis occurs in a potato, and how it affects the potato in different molar solutions of sucrose and water. Before planning my exact experiment, I have decided to do some research about osmosis so that I will know what I am doing and should therefore be able to conduct my experiment in a way which gives the most accurate results. Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from the solution with a higher concentration of water into solution with less water, through a partially permeable membrane. In this case, the tiny holes in the membranes of the potato cells will allow the water molecules to pass through in and out of the solution and the potato, depending on the concentration gradient of the two substances.
