In nature, when there is a membrane as a separation medium, water will generally transfer from the least contaminant concentration side to the higher contamination side. The flow will stop when osmotic pressure on both sides is equalized. Reverse Osmosis, as its name implies, apply pressure on the higher concentrated contaminant side to force the clean water into the lower concentration side, thus generation of more cleaner water.
