Osmosis Introduction I am going to do an experiment to find the effect sugar solution has on osmosis of a potato. Theory Water is made of molecules; these molecules have weak bonds, which enables the molecules to move freely. Plants absorb water from the soil through the root hairs. The water outside the root cells is normally at a higher concentration then the water inside the cell. Because of this the water can diffuse in and out the cells, the cells can lose and gain water. Osmosis across a partially permeable membrane means that water moves from a high concentration to a low concentration. As you can see there is a net movement of water into the cell. However on a dry day when the cell doesn't get enough water, and there is a higher concentration of water inside the cell than outside the cell then the cell becomes flaccid.
