Osmosis coursework. Aim. In this experiment we will try to see how the concentration of a sugar solution affects the weight of pre-measured potatoes. Prediction I think that the potatoes will gain weight by allowing water to pass into them and making the cells turgid. They will take in most weight in pure water but they will begin to lose weight at a point and then the cells will plasmalise. Causing the potatoes to lose weight as the cells become flaccid. From our preliminary work we can see that the potatoes have partially permeable membranes and cannot allow sugar to pass through them only water. The water will try and pass through the membrane to dilute the sugar solution either on the outside of the potato or in the potato.
