Introduction Free energy and water potential Free energy is defined as the maximum energy available (excluding temperature change) to do work. The free energy per mole is the chemical potential (????The water potential is the chemical potential of a water solution in a system minus the chemical potential of pure water at atmospheric pressure and at the same temperature. Water potential is a measure of the tendency of water to move from high free energy to lower free energy. The water potential of a system is also the ability to do work compared with the ability of the same quantity of pure water at atmospheric pressure and at the same temperature.
