Factors Affecting The Rate Of Mediated Reactions PLANNING Aim: I am investigating the factors affecting the rate of reaction of enzymes using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Introduction Enzymes are biological catalysts. They are made of proteins. They act as biocatalysts to speed up reactions. Living cells are enzymes. They work at an optimum temperature and an optimum pH. Enzymes can be denatured if the temperature is too high. Enzymes have a 'lock and key' theory. Each specific enzyme is designed to fit a specific substrate. The enzyme is the active site and also the lock. It is shaped so only the correct shape and size key can fit the correct shape and size lock. The key is called the substrate. The substrate in a reaction is the chemical that reacts and the product is the chemical that is made. Enzymes are not used up in the reaction; they are used over and over...
