Investigating Osmosis Throughout this experiment I will be studying the effect of osmosis on a plant cell in the form of a potato and how the concentration of a solution can vary its affect. In order to successfully carry out his experiment and analyse the results to my best potential I will need to refer back to the background knowledge I have collated on the topic. Osmosis is the passage of water from a region of high water concentration through a semi-permeable membrane to a region of low water concentration. Two examples of semi-permeable membranes: a) Visking (dialysis) tubing b) The cell membrane Since the cell membrane is semi-permeable, osmosis is important in the passage of water into and out of cells and organisms.
