Lucy Burbridge An Experiment to Estimate the water potential of potato cells by measuring the effect of osmosis in surrounding solutions of different salt concentrations. Osmosis is the net movement of water molecules from a weak to a stronger solution through a partially permeable membrane. Water moves from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration. Water potential = solute potential + pressure potential. Pure water always has a water potential of 0, while the solutes in other solutions make anything else negative. For a cell to have a water potential of 0 the solute and pressure potentials must cancel each other out. I predict that if the water potential of the potato cells is more negative than surrounding solution then water will move into the potato causing its mass to increase.
