Enzyme Coursework Background Information Chemical reactions take place in the cells of living organisms, these are called metabolic reactions. These reactions naturally occur slowly but they can be speeded up. They can be speeded up by an increase in temperature and it also can be speeded up in the presence of a catalyst. A catalyst is a substance which speeds up a chemical reaction without being changed itself. One of these catalysts is enzymes. Enzymes are made up from proteins and they are biological catalysts that speed up metabolic reactions. Enzymes have a depression on their surfaces called active sites. When a substrate molecule collides into the right enzyme, it fits into the active site and stays there until changed. The substrate fits into the active site like a key fits into a lock. Substrate Molecule Product Molecule Fits into active site reaction takes place Enzymes generally work best at thirty seven...
