Diabetes Mellitus: Is it our lifestyles affecting the increase and can stem cell research help? Diabetes Mellitus or more commonly known as Type 2 Diabetes is a condition caused by high levels of insulin circulating in the blood as the pancreas is still producing insulin but for some reason the effect of insulin is impaired, which is called insulin resistance. Insulin Resistance has some effects like: - High glucose - Disturbs fat levels in the blood, causing the arteries of the heart to clog - Raises blood pressure - Increases chances of gout to develop ( condition of the bones) This diagram shows insulin production in a normal pancreas.
