THE EFFECT OF PH ON THE ENZYME CATALASE THEORY Catalase is an enzyme that is found in many tissues. It breaks down Hydrogen Peroxide into water and oxygen. 2H2O2 ? 2H2O + O2 Catalase is an important enzyme. This is because Hydrogen Peroxide is a toxic by-product of aerobic respiration. (Therefore it is found in all cells which respire in this way.) Enzymes are catalysts. This means that they increase the rate of chemical reactions. They work in a 'lock and key' method in which a substrate molecule and an enzyme interact at a specific active sire on the enzyme, forming a temporary enzyme-substrate complex. Once the products of the reaction have been formed, the substrate leaves the active site of the enzyme so that it is left free to combine with another substrate molecule. Enzyme + substrate ? Enzyme-substrate complex ? Enzyme and products A change to the pH of the enzyme's environment causes...
