Biology Investigation on Osmosis in Potato Chips Planning Aim: My aim is to investigate the effect of varying the concentration of the sugar solution on the osmosis activity in a potato chip. Background: Osmosis defines net movement of water and other solutions. The molecules move from a high concentrated area into an area were they are less concentrated. This movement only happens in semi-permeable membranes such as the cell wall, it lets smaller molecules such as water pass through it but does not allow bigger molecules pass through. The molecules diffuse until they have reached a state of equilibrium, which means that the molecules are randomly spread out through the space. No area has a higher or lower concentration than the other. Plant cells must have a very strong cell wall because this keeps their structure upright i.e. they stay in shape.
