Biology Coursework Osmosis in Potato Chips Aim To investigate the effect varying concentration of a certain salt solution has on the amount of osmotic activity between the solution and a potato chip of a given size. Planning Experimental Procedures Preliminary Experiment For the preliminary experiment I used 3 cm long chips with an average mass of 4.2 grams (g). We only used two different concentrations of solution for this experiment, 1molar (M) and distilled water. We submerged the potato chips in 15mls of salt solution and left them for 15 minutes. Here are our results: Chips placed in concentrations Mass before Submersion Mass after submersion (15 mins) Salt (1M) 4.2 3.9 Distilled Water 4.3 4.5 The results that we got were much as I expected.
