An investigation into the affects of a Sucrose solution on potato chips Aims of the Experiment The aim of this experiment is to see how a potato changes in size when placed in different dilution concentrations of sucrose and water. With this we aim to see the affects of Osmosis in the potato chip. Background Information (Research) Osmosis Osmosis is the special name to describe the diffusion of water across a membrane, from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution. In biology this usually means the diffusion of water into and out of a cell. Osmosis is only one special type of diffusion because it is only water molecules and their movement that we are considering. Osmosis, the spontaneous passage or diffusion of water or other solvents through a semi permeable membrane (one that blocks the passage of dissolved substances--i.e., solutes). The process, important in biology, was first thoroughly studied in 1877 by a German plant...
