An Experiment into the effects of varying the concentration of Catalase on reaction rate Plan Background information Enzymes: Many different enzymes live in our body, they help to break down or make chemicals, which are important for our survival. They speed up reactions without altering any chemical makeup or increasing the temperature, which would kill or denature the enzyme. This energy of activation can be thought of as a wall that must be overcome in order for the reaction to occur. Reactions with high energies of activation (high wall) require larger amounts of energy in order for the reaction to occur. The smaller the activation energy (low wall), the less energy is needed for a reaction to occur. Think of jumping over a fence. A high fence would require more energy to jump over than a low fence. An enzyme lowers the height of this fence and so decreases the amount of energy needed...
