The aim of this experiment is to find out how sucrose concentration affects osmosis in potatoes, using different sucrose concentrations over a set period of time. There are many different variables for this experiment. The independent variable is the change in sucrose concentration, and the dependant variable is the change in mass. Time, volume of sucrose solutions, surface area, and the starting mass of the potato are all control variables: Control variable: How it will be kept Constant: Why should it be kept constant? Time Take all of the potato chips out of the solutions at the same time, and put them in at the same time If some potato chips are left in a solution for more/less time that others, then it gives the solution more/less time to diffuse in/out of the potato Volume of solution This will be kept the same (30cm ) and will be measured at eye level to ensure in order to increase accuracy.
