Kate Parkin 11HB How Osmosis Effects A Potato Chip In Different Strengths Of Salt Water Aim: After conducting this experiment I hope to find out how the mass of a potato chip changes when added to different strengths of salt water due to osmosis. Scientific Background: Osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a high concentration of water to a low concentration of water, across a permeable selective membrane. This occurs naturally in plants. The movement of water into and out of a potato will cause the mass to change. If the concentration of water outside a potato is less than the concentration inside the potato water will move outwards and the potato will shrink, hence the mass of the potato will decrease. Similarly if the concentration inside a potato is less than the concentration outside the potato water will move inwards and the mass of the potato will increase. At some point water will neither...
