Hypothesis Caffeine acts as a stimulant. When taken it gradually increases the heart rate causing the heart to beat faster depending on the amount of caffeine accepted. Caffeine belongs to a group of compounds called methylxanthines that block a receptor on the surface of heart muscle cells for adenosine. It is caffeine's obstruction of the adenosine receptor in the heart that causes the heart to beat faster after a certain dosage of caffeine. I therefore predict the more caffeine added to the surrounding water to where the flea is allocated, the higher the flea's heart rate will be.
