Pulse Rates Aim To find out what happens to my pulse rate when I change the position I am in e.g. lying down, sitting down and standing up. Background Knowledge A pulse is a series of pressure waves along an artery, caused by contraction of the left ventricle of the heart. Things such as exercise and different body positions can alter your pulse rate. Prediction I think that when I take my pulse lying down, it will be the slowest, sitting down will be in the middle and standing up will the fastest. I think this because when you are lying down, your heart does not need to beat as fast because it isn't very hard to pump blood horizontally. Sitting down requires the heart to beat a little faster because of gravity acting against the blood so the heart has to put more effort into it.
