March 2003 Laurens Taylor Investigation of the effect of exercise On the heart rate Planning The heart is a main organ in the human body; it's primary function is to pump blood around the body to the muscles. The blood contains oxygen and food when travelling to the muscles but when returning to the lungs contains carbon dioxide. The heart has four valves and four chambers; two of the chambers are on each side. The valves stop blood going the wrong way when the heart muscles contract to pump the blood around the body. The blood is pumped to the body's muscles through the left side and returned to the lungs through the right side. Prediction * If I exercise my heart will increase the heartbeats. * When I stop exercising my heart will slowly decrease in beats This is because when you exercise, your muscles respire.
