BIOLOGY COURSEWORK Aim The aim of the experiment was to discover what variations occurred in the heartbeat of three participants, by reference to the length of time involved and the type of exercise they undertook. It was expected that the heartbeat would increase at a steady rate, the longer the experiment went on. Background Information The heart rate of an average human being varies from 150 beats per minute in young children, to around 60 beats per minute in adults. This can sometimes be either faster or slower- particularly if the person is overweight, smokes, or eats unhealthily. A baby's heartbeat is very fast while in the womb but slows when its own lungs take over at birth. One way to keep the heart healthy is to exercise.
