The Human Heart Beat April 1, 2003 SPCH 1000 Authors: Sujata Sardar Abstract: Through the observation of the structure-function relationship of the human heart, we can understand the technique of our heart beat. Introduction: The heart is a vital organ of the circulatory system. In the human, the heart is located behind the breast bone and rests more to the left of the midline than the right. Somewhat conical in shape, the base of the heart is directed upward to the right and slightly backward. The apex of the heart touches the chest wall between the fifth and sixth ribs. The heart is composed of cardiac muscle. Cardiac muscle is composed of mononucleated, small, elongated cells which are tapered at their ends; these cells are called cardiac muscle fibers. Each fiber is electrically connected to one another at gap junctions called intercalated discs that are held together by anchoring structures called desmosomes. The electrical current passage...
