Case Study: Should Smoking be banned in Public Places? Introduction Banning smoking in public places would have a massive affect on the UK's health. Currently, 40% of the UK's population smoke. According to http://www.ilcat.org/ tobacco use kills about 420,000 smokers each year. In addition, 53,000 people die from passive smoking. Whether or not smoking should be banned or not comes down to a decision between the healths of the whole nation versus the freedom of a minority. The government has proposed a smoking ban for England in all public places which commences from the summer of 2007. The effects of smoking 50% of lifetime smokers die. Half of these deaths will occur in middle-age. Tobacco contributes to lots of cancers including lung cancer and mouth cancer.
