Case Study: Should Smoking be banned in Public Places? Introduction Banning smoking in public places would have a massive affect on the UK's health. Currently, 40% of the UK's population smoke. According to http://www.ilcat.org/ tobacco use kills about 420,000 smokers each year. In addition, 53,000 people die from passive smoking. Whether or not smoking should be banned or not comes down to a decision between the healths of the whole nation versus the freedom of a minority. The government has proposed a smoking ban for England in all public places which commences from the summer of 2007. The effects of smoking 50% of lifetime smokers die. Half of these deaths will occur in middle-age. Tobacco contributes to lots of cancers including lung cancer and mouth cancer. The mixture of nicotine and carbon monoxide in each cigarette you smoke temporarily increases your heart rate and blood pressure, straining your heart and blood vessels. This can...
