Robotic Surgery: Mitral Valve Repair Robotic surgery is an experimental technique that is being used to provide a minimally invasive surgical solution to many ailments of the human body. It is beginning to be used in place of laparoscopic procedures, such as: gallbladder removal, correcting heartburn, or experimentally to remove cancerous prostate glands (Comarow 52). Its most common use, however, is to repair leaking mitral valves. Mitral valve regurgitation is a common heart ailment. This is a disorder in which the mitral valve doesn't close properly, allowing blood to flow back into the left atrium. Symptoms of this disorder include: irregular heart beats, chest pain (tightness, discomfort, or pressure in the chest), difficulty breathing after exercise, fatigue, cough, and shortness of breath when lying down ("Mitral" 2001). Mitral valve regurgitation can lead to many problems: endocarditis (swelling of the inside heart lining of the chambers and valves in the heart), stroke, embolisms, or arrhythmias ("Mitral" 2001).
