14th November 2004 Andrew Sinnott 10S In your opinion was how effective was the level of medical and surgical knowledge in 1750? Give reasons and evidence for your answer. The level of surgical and medical knowledge in 1750 was very basic to say the least. Doctors knew that certain herbs could be used to improve the symptoms of some diseases or even cure them; they knew that Alcohol and extracts of the opium poppy could be used to stop pain to some extent. Even though doctors still thought that disease was spread by foul smelling air they knew that a strong smell from wine could indicate the presence of disease. Doctors still did not know that dirty intoxicating living and hospital conditions helped spread disease. Doctors still did not now what caused individual diseases like the plague and that vaccination could prevent people against serious disease. It took the work of Edward Jenner who observed...
