Task 2a. The cardiac cycle and use of an electrocardiogram (ECG) to monitor cardiac activity. The cardiovascular system consists of the heart and the blood vessels through which the heart beat pumps blood around the body. During exercise, a number of changes take place to the cardiovascular system to ensure that the muscles receive the required amounts of oxygen and nutrients it requires. The cardiac cycle is all of the events that occur in one heartbeat. As it is a cycle there is no beginning or end, the only kind of end is when you die. One heartbeat takes 0.8 seconds and it consists of 2 phases. The Systole phase, when the heart contracts it lasts about 0.3 seconds. The ventricles contract and blood flows into the aorta. The Diastole phase, this is where the heart ventricles relax, 0.5 seconds. When the heart relaxes blood flows from the atria and into the verticals. During...
