J., Caballero B., Appel L.J., Charleston J., & Whelton P.K., 1998). According to Boutain (2001), "The mismanagement of hypertension also known as high blood pressure remains one of the most obvious health care issues in the United States" (p.225). High blood pressure (HBP) is a serious condition that can lead to stroke, heart disease, kidney failure, and other serious health problems (University of Cincinnati [UC], 2001). One in five Americans aged six and older have hypertension. Studies have shown that failure of the blood pressure to fall during the nighttime is associated with a higher incidence of target organ damage, including left ventricular hypertrophy, and retinopathy (Kotchen et al, 2000).
