Hydrogenation is a method used to turn liquid oil into solid fat, meaning the resulting product is known as hydrogenated vegetable oil or hydrogenated fat. This process is achieved by using high temperatures and forcing hydrogen into the liquid oil over a period of hours, in the presence of a catalyst such as platinum or nickel. This means that the resulting hydrogenated fat is a completely unnatural product. This fat is known as trans fats.
