Introduction The heart is a hollow, myogenic structure, which is divided into four chambers. Cardiac muscle is similar to skeletal muscle as it is striated, due the overlapping actin and myosin filaments. In cardiac muscle the action potential is around 100 times longer than in skeletal muscle and cardiac muscle has a long refractory period. This ensures that cardiac muscle contractions are always short twitches and doesn't allow summation to occur, which would lead to a smooth, continuous contraction called tetanic contraction. The long refractory period "cancels out" any stimulus that occurs allowing the heart to relax, which is essential to enable the heart to refill with blood. The Cardiac muscles cells...
