Factors affecting the development of coronary heart disease. The coronary arteries are small blood vessels that keep the heart muscle supplied with oxygen and nutrients that are needed to keep the heart healthy and working properly. Like all muscles in the body the heart also needs a constant supply of blood containing oxygen and nutrients, so when the coronary arteries become clogged with fatty deposits, the coronary artery is not able to supply enough blood to the heart, this results in coronary heart disease (CHD) The coronary heart disease builds up over the years, where fatty deposits or atheroma narrows the coronary arteries. CHD is caused by the inside walls of the coronary arteries thickening, this is called atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis narrows the space that the blood is able to flow through.
